73-Year-Old Woman Dies in Carroll County Crash on Sunday

A fatal collision along Littlestown Pike in Carroll County left a 73-year-old woman dead on Sunday afternoon, marking a tragic end to an otherwise routine day for drivers in the area. According to Maryland State Police, the deadly incident took place shortly after 1:30 p.m. in the 3000 block of Littlestown Pike, where a dump truck and a Dodge Ram pickup were involved in a head-on crash.

Investigators later determined that the dump truck, driven by 52-year-old Matthew Dell of Manchester, was traveling along the two-lane roadway when it crossed over the double yellow center line for reasons still under investigation. The vehicle moved directly into the oncoming lane, striking the pickup truck head-on with significant force. The impact left the front of both vehicles heavily damaged and scattered debris across the roadway.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, identified as 73-year-old Sandra Stigler of Littlestown, suffered fatal injuries in the collision. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, Stigler was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities noted that she appeared to be traveling lawfully in her lane at the time of the crash.

Dell, the dump truck operator, was evaluated by emergency personnel but did not sustain any injuries. He remained on-scene and cooperated with law enforcement as the investigation began. Officials closed a sizable section of Littlestown Pike for several hours while accident reconstruction teams documented evidence, took measurements, and worked to clear the wreckage.

Maryland State Police say the investigation is ongoing, and they are continuing to examine what caused the dump truck to veer into the wrong lane. No charges have been filed at this time, but investigators will review all findings before determining whether further action is necessary. The community of Littlestown and the surrounding area are mourning the loss of Stigler, whose life was cut short in the unexpected crash.
